Why Do We Feel Better On Sunny Days?

For me, the difference between how I feel on a sunny day versus a cloudy day can be quite dramatic. But it makes the most difference if I'm actually out in the sunshine, not just seeing it through a window. I seem to have a better sense of well-being and more energy. Are there any good scientific reasons for this or is it just an emotional reaction?
Yes.....Exposure to sunlight causes a glandular release of the "feel good" hormone Serotonin. So when the sun is beaming, your body gets more energy making it easier to feel good. This is not to say that you cannot feel as good on a cloudy day, but in this case you need to draw on energy from other sources to compensate for the reduced portion of energy from the sun.
What do you think? Does that make sense?

  3. Absolutely! This is for sure: in Vancouver, we catch the sun, we are there so many rains. Gloomy weather adds sadness. Possible impact and a lack of vitamin D. Thanks for the comment, come again:)

  8. It definitely makes sense, and I always feel a lot more energetic and generally happier in the sunshine, which is probably why I'm so moody in Winter. I'll just blame it on that from now!

  9. I used to live up north, and when I was in college in class at the first start of warm sunny weather outside I was so distracted! I couldn't wait to get out of class and go outside. During the winter time I was always bummin' around depressed...hahaha but in spring and summer I was so happy. I totally agree that the weather affects the mood!

  13. It makes a lot of sense! I went through a phase where I was working long hours indoors, and I didn't see the sun even once in a day. It was a terrible time, and I was quite depressed. To help, I started going to the tanning salon every few days, so that I could feel some light and warmth! It helped a bit, but now I have adjusted my life such that I can feel the sun most days :)

Beautiful pictures, they make me pine for summer!

  16. I enjoy the occasional cloudy day and have to say I really love the rain. But if it weren't for the sun I don't think I'd be able to enjoy it so much.

  27. My mood is undoubtedly better on sunny days! However, I usually am able to trick myself into a better mood on cloudy days by wearing bright, patterned, fun clothes. I find the way I dress also has a big impact on my mood!
